Tuesday, 19 December 2017, Sirens, Episode 11 (end)

The reading has reached the end of the musical episode, “Sirens”.

Please note that there will be no reading during the Christmas holidays. The group  will pick up Ulysses again and start episode 12, “Cyclops”, on Tuesday, 9 January 2018.

For commentaries on Ulysses:

If you wish to read Chandra Holm's explanatory notes about the end of this episode, check her earlier entries for this blog, e.g. the post for 23 June 2015.

Chandra hosted the blog when she was herself following Fritz Senn's Tuesday readings of Ulysses and has gathered a wealth of elucidating material and commentaries. You can find her blog entries to the right of this text in the bar under Blog Archive.

If you are looking for summaries and commentaries in published works you can find a number of helpful books at the Zurich Foundation. They are available to all members of the public. One place to start are the following two classics:

Killeen, Terence. Ulysses Unbound: A Reader's Companion to James Joyce's Ulysses. 2004. Shelf mark: C.U. 359 (features summary, commentary and additional notes for each episode of Ulysses)

Hart, Clive and David Hayman. James Joyce's Ulysses. Critical Essays. 1977. Shelf mark: C.U. 191 (devotes one chapter to each episode of Ulysses)

With good wishes for the New Year and all the reading hours to come
